Colours & finishes

See the finish before you pour it.

Concrete reads differently in daylight than it does on a phone screen. Here’s how the three main finishes compare, where to see real samples around Gippsland, and the colour charts from the suppliers we pour with.

The three finishes

Plain, coloured or exposed.

  • Newly poured concrete driveway in front of weatherboard home, Sale

    Plain

    $85 to $120 / m²

Grey concrete with a broom finish for grip. The cheapest of the three and the most forgiving. It shows tyre marks and leaf stain the most, which is the trade-off.

  • Coloured concrete path running alongside a brick home, Sale

    Coloured

    $120 to $180 / m²

An oxide goes through the whole mix, so it's not a coating that peels. Good for paths and surrounds you want to sit with the house colours. Dark colours get hot in full sun.

  • Finished exposed-aggregate pool surround with glass fence and garden edge, Sale

    Exposed aggregate

    $100 to $160 / m²

The stone in the mix becomes the surface. Best grip when wet and hides marks better than anything else. You pick the stone blend, which is why seeing it in person matters most here.

Prices are ballparks for a Gippsland driveway, supplied and laid, not a quote. For the full comparison on grip, heat and upkeep, read choosing a concrete finish.

Who we pour with

We pick the plant based on where your job is.

Gippsland is a big patch, and no single plant reaches all of it. We use four suppliers depending on the town and the finish. That also means not every colour is available everywhere, so tell us what you liked and Nick will confirm what works for your job when he quotes.

  • Sale Ready MixedMost of our plain and coloured concrete in Sale and the towns around it.
  • HansonWhere Sale Ready Mixed can't supply, plus their Imagecrete exposed and coloured ranges.
  • HolcimMost of our exposed aggregate. Their Geostone range has more stone blends than anyone else.
  • Latrobe Valley ConcretePlain, exposed and coloured for jobs in and around Traralgon.

Fair questions

What people ask about finishes.

Can I get any colour from any supplier?
No. Each supplier has its own range, and which plant we pour from depends on where your job is. Note the colour name and the supplier you liked, and Nick will tell you whether that exact finish works for your area or what the closest match is.
Do I need to go to a yard to pick a finish?
No, but it helps with exposed aggregate. Stone blends look different on a screen than they do in daylight. If you can't get to a yard, Nick brings samples to the site visit.
Which finish costs the most?
Coloured and decorative work and exposed aggregate both cost more than plain. As a ballpark for a Gippsland driveway, plain runs $85 to $120 per m², exposed $100 to $160 and decorative $120 to $180. Site prep, access and the crossover move the final number, so you get a written quote after the site visit.
Will the finish look exactly like the sample?
Close, not identical. Stone is natural, so every pour varies a little, and the cement colour, the sun and the seal all change how it reads. That's why we'd rather you see a real sample than pick from a photo.
